WHETHER it was the ABVP’s recent attack on Ramjas college, or the February 2016 incident in JNU, or the number of other attacks on “anti-national” artists and journalists that have taken place under the Modi-government, numerous media outlets – print and electronic – have been all too happy to cast these confrontations into the false binary of “free speech vs nationalism”.This uncritical acceptance of the label of “nationalist” – which the Sangh parivar has conveniently ascribed to themselves – reflects a poor knowledge of history among many senior journalists. This is being used as an asset by the Hindutva coalition…

INDIA is under siege from international capital. It is on course not only to be permanently beholden to US state-corporate interests but is heading towards environmental catastrophe much faster than many may think.According to the World Bank’s lending report, based on data compiled up to 2015, India was easily the largest recipient of its loans in the history of the institution. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the World Bank exerts a certain hold over India. In the 1990s, the IMF and World Bank wanted India to shift hundreds of millions out of agriculture. In return for up to £90 billion in loans, India…

Amidst such political clamour in the market, is there any opposition in the country, who is not attacking the party in government for not being able to attract investment? Is there any political party in power, who has not been desperately trying to prove its efficiency in terms of drawing more and more investment? Be…

The decades long rightist Congress led government is replaced by the ultra-rightist BJP-led Government. The Modi government for the last four years is intensifying the Corporate- Saffron Fascist rule at maddening pace. But that is not the phenomenon only in India. The world today presents a mixed picture. On the one hand, in many Latin American countries the progressive forces…

ALTHOUGH empirical research concerning the distribution of income is relatively recent, there are figures available today for a great number of countries, both developed and underdeveloped, which measure the degree of inequality in income distribution by means of Gini coefficients and Lorenz curves. In general, this research shows that inequality in the distribution of income is more pronounced in the periphery of the system than in its advanced core. This inequality arises for a number of reasons, including the following:Firstly, labour productivity varies from unit to unit, and from sector to sector. Productivity would only become equalised given the theoretical…

SAMIR AMIN born in Egypt as the son of an Egyptian father and a French mother, after moving to Paris, though joined the French Communist Party (PCF) at an young age, later distanced himself from it on account of his differences with the policies pursued by Soviet Union. However, till the end of his life, Amin stood as the most radical political economist and leading progressive world intellectual challenging US hegemony consistently calling for a “Eurasian” alliance (composed of Europe, Russia China and India) to defeat Washington’s criminal designs over the entire planet. At one time (probably in 2006?) he…
