Surama Ghatak Passes Away, RCF Pays Homage to Her

REVOLUTIONARY Cultural Forum (RCF) General Secretary com. Tuhin expressed condolences on the demise of com. Surama Ghatak, life partner of famous film director Ritwik Ghatak and herself a versatile writer. Along with documenting many of Ghatak’s works, she wrote books like Padma Theke Titas, Shilong Jailer Diary, Ritwik and numerous others. She was also a member of the Communist party from her student days. She also had keen interest in Indian and world cinema.

She was born in Shillong and later moved to Kolkata. Her passion was Theatre. She had worked with IPTA. She had been attracted to late Ritwik Ghatak seeing his performance in “Bisarjan” drama. Though many had advised her not to have relation with an “anarchist” like Ritwik, she decided to be his life partner. She had a 20 months life term while in Shillong for her social/political activities. She had penned two books namely “Ritwik” and “From Padma to Titas” and also was working on an Anthology. She was suffering from Cancer for the last 7 years. She had still maintained relation with Left minded organisations and individuals. Her works echo the hardships of her life. Surama Ghatak sets a fine example of a “modern woman” back in the 50s and 60s. Her life was a life of battle. She breathed her last at Kolkata on 7th May midnight at the age of 92. She was closely associated with Indian Peoples Theatre Association (IPTA). Revolutionary Cultural Forum (RCF) organized condolence meeting today at Raipur, paid homage and remembered her contribution towards progressive cultural movement & pro people progressive film movement. 
