Obituary : Dr. Asok Mitra

DR. ASOK MITRA passed away on 1st May morning in a private hospital at Kolkata at the age of 90. He was a prominent economist and left thinker who consistently opposed World Bank and IMF, and the neoliberal policies advanced by them. Though he was formally with CPI(M) and was the Left Front government’s finance minister for a decade till 1986, he resigned due to differences with Jyothi basu. He was friendly to CPI(ML) movement, but was a strong critic of its early left adventurist positions. In 1972 and twice after 1986 I had met him and had long discussions when his differences with CPI(M) and critic of ML movement were explained by him. He remained a strong critic of the neoliberal regime and close friend of the struggling left forces till the end. We express our deep condolences at his departure.
