ON IRELAND REFERENDUM ON ABORTION
MORE than two thirds of Irish people have voted for allowing abortion in s referendum. It is a big blow to the religious fundamentalists who were opposing abortion vehemently. In 2013, even when life of 31-year-old Savita Halappanavar, a dentist from Karnataka, was in extreme danger if her pregnancy was not terminated, the establishment opposed it leading to her painful death. The conservative Catholic establishment was totally impervious to human needs. It is the long people’s struggles following this and numerous other similar cases the referendum has overwhelmingly called for changing the constitution to throw out this inhuman clause prohibiting abortion. In the present international situation when ultra rightist foces are trying to reach hegemonic positions everywhere with the support of religious fundamentalists of all hues, it is another step towards democratization. Congratulations to all those who campaigned for this demand and voted for it.
