A Step towards Gender Equality

IN a case when Muslim women went to the Supreme Court as petitioners, it has set aside on 22nd August the ‘talaq-e-biddat’ or instant and irrevocable ‘talaq’ as a “manifestly arbitrary” practice, which is not protected by Article 25 (freedom of religion) of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has also asked the government to enact laws to protect this order within six months.

As far as the Muslim women are concerned, it is a first step towards release from the clutches of reactionary customs imposed by the clergy and vested interests in this country when even Pakistan and Bangladesh like Muslim majority countries had stopped it.

All the progressive forces should support this order and strive for gender equality for all women from a secular democratic standpoint. Only by firmly standing for a genuine secular Uniform Civil Code which ensures gender equality for all women and for those from trans gender, the progressive forces can defeat the nefarious moves of RSS parivar for imposing its own sectarian civil code.
